Hi, Cami. If you want to needle felt directly into canvas, first do a test piece to see if the wool will hold in the canvas. If it is difficult to pull out after it has been well needled in, it will probably hold. Another thing you can do is to ir...

I agree with you that felting is a process that can be applied to fibers other than wool. For example, rabbit hair is very amenable to being felted. Here is a link to an interesting article about felted hats:
http://www.thehatsite.com/felt.html
I include it because it talks specifically about Wool felt, Fur Felt, and Beaver Felt. So ... there are at least three types of felt!
I make felted wool (or fulled wool) from old sweaters ... same process as typical wet felting: hot water, soap, agitation. Some people, usually hard-working wet felters, get hideously bent out of shape when I call it felted wool, wanting it to only be referred to as fulled wool. But, technically, either description is correct. It is the process of the fibers interlocking that is correctly called felting. If the fibers have already been woven, then it can ALSO be called fulling, but does not need to be exclusively called fulling. Similarly, when you are using needles to "smash" those fibers together, you are felting the wool and the end product is wool felt or felted wool. As you probably already know, but I'll say it anyway for those who might not, historians usually surmise that the first wool felt came about because early people used wool wrapped around their feet for warmth, then wrapped other fibers around the wool. The action of the feet perspiring (moisture) and stamping (agitation) created the felt. Also, if you think about it, dreadlocks are a sort of felt made from human hair. :)

Yea, another Cat lover. We could probably start a group on just cats.

Welcome Judith to Fiber Focus and "Hot and Wet." I sent you and the members a letter this morning and hope you get deeply involved with fun stuff like melting things with heat and /or water. Talk to you again soon.
